OurTechTip - Find that virus that won't go away...

by Robert Bolanos

CRESWELL - This week’s tip is a helpful hint for your weekly virus scan on your computer (you do that, right?). What do you do when your virus scan completes and tells you it was unable to remove some detected viruses? Reformat your system? Take it in for repair? Often you can take care of this yourself by checking an often overlooked hiding spot for viruses. In many cases, a virus will load itself into your system restore files. It’s a common technique used by hackers to keep re-infecting your computer by using your own back up system against you. So anytime you are infected with a virus, make sure that you disable the system restore feature and then run your virus scan.

Disabling the System Restore in Windows XP:
1. Click on the Start Menu

2. Right-click "My Computer"

3. Select "Properties".

4. Click the "System Restore" tab.

5. Check the box "Turn off System Restore" then click OK.

Disabling the System Restore in Windows ME:
1. Right-click "My Computer" on the desktop.

2. Choose "Properties".

3. Select the "Performance" tab

4. Click the "File System" button

5. Go to the "Troubleshooting" tab.

6. Put a check mark next to "Disable System Restore" then click OK.
You'll need to restart your computer.
Run your virus scan. Once it is complete, follow the instructions above in reverse to Enable System Restore. As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need additional information. And if you’re not scanning your system at least once a week, you’re taking unnecessary risk with your data. Be safe.
